Jerry Springer, Ricki Lake and whatever else is on has this wonderful effect of no matter how crap your life is, no matter how screwed up you feel, they let you know that there’s always a country with a ready supply of people more screwed up.

the social pressure to fit in, to be rich, to dress well and to look perfect can only be assuaged when people who cannot have it all are made to understand that they are still in demand in this country and in the world in general. this is why i appreciate to no small extent, the jobs being done by all the talk show hosts in the world. they could do with a little diversification from celebrities and fashion and focus on sombre real-life issues, which is why oprah remains number one.
