blog spam

Mikal laments about the evils of blog spam – stillhq.com – Blog spam continued.

Let me let all of you non-wordpress using people (who have comments enabled) know that you have been living in sin!

Yes, there is an answer to all your problems. I’ve been running the HashCash extenstion to wordpress for about a week. In that time, I have received no comment spam. Only real comments.

How freakin awesome is that?

  1. You’re making the assumption that you’ve been targeted by the spammers though. It took months for them to find me. Does WordPress give you statistics for the number of refused posts? I’m thinking a capcha might be another possible answer…

  2. I think you can make it do it…. depending on the plugin that you use…

the one i’m using makes the browser do a MD5SUM on a bit of random data and send the result back. If the checksums don’t match, it discards it.

otherwise, it ends up in your moderation queue.

    I think it’s customisable – i just haven’t looked.

WP also has a seperate ‘mark as spam’ option (rather than just approve/delete) – the idea being that then ppl will have a nice sample of spam to train future intelligence.

  3. have installed it on your word… does this mean i can remove the ‘force cc to moderate every single comment before it appears on the blog’ option?

    does it? huh? huh?

  4. Yeah – i think you can.

I have only had valid comments in my moderation queue since I installed it. I think i’m about to switch of the ‘force stewart to moderate every single bloody comment’ option.
