  1. I have a 4 month old linksys wireless router (WRT54G). Over the past 2 weeks, it works about 40% of the time, but I can plug directly into the modem and always have internet. It keeps on resetting the IP address to 169.xxx.xxx.xxx (windows default). Since I have internet when I hard wire the computer to the modem, the problem must be in the router.

I was on the phone 90 minutes this morning on hold with linksys. I was disconnected…. Now I am on hold again, but this time for over 100 minutes!

FUCK LINKSYS. I AM GOING TO HAVE MY DOG SHIT ALL OVER THIS FUCKING ROUTER AND RETURN IT TO LINK FUCKING SYS JUST FOR THE PLEASURE OF IT ALL!

meanwhile, off to Best Buy for a USR router…

  2. The newer revisions of the WRT54G – the ones *not* running Linux seem to be really unreliable and crappy. The WRT54GL (that runs Linux) or the older WRT54G models seem to be much better.

Billion is meant to be pretty good too.

  3. Bought the newer NetGear Draft N Range Max etc etc. with the reccomended USB 2.0 Draft N adaptor… all I can say is, it blows. Connection keeps dropping, speed is at 1993 levels, and the computer and router are within 4 feet of eachother. How many times can I call netgear? 4 times so far and DAYS of working on this. How much Indian English can I take? It’s so hard to understand them on the phone. Tell Indian tech support people to STOP LINKING WORDS TOGETHER. IT SOUNDS UN-NATURAL WHEN YOU TALK. Intereference? I don’t own anything yet, not even a phone. All my equipment is brand-spanking new. And from what I see on the net, Netgear is the best of the three brands (d-link and linksys). My time matters to me. So to all you out there I’ll say : I had lots of problems with my netgear Range Max (WNR834M) Router and the corresponding adaptor (USB 2.0). The tech support people, although trained to be polite, were remarkably unhelpful; they never solved my problem. I did finally get the thing up and running, if “up and running” counts as constantly dropping the signal and moving at a snail’s pace. So I discconnect everything and know what I do? I plug in the cable from my modem to my computer directly and voila! I’m smoking at cable internet speeds. I think wireless internet for low end consumers isn’t developed enough to be worth buying OR netgear really sucks, I don’t know which. I’m returning everything to bestbuy and buying a 50 foot LAN cable.

  4. Yeah, I’m not a big fan of Netgear myself. When I play online gaming sometimes and I log into the forum/chat area and then exit, I have to wait a few minutes before I can relog. I’m not sure what the deal is but it seems to respond slower than any previous routers that I’ve used.
