dude – dunking machine

Talk about freakin funny. Bid for the balls to dunk your favourite Open Source luminary.

Check out my Photos from today! (17 Jan)

some are *real* funny.

GNOME.conf.au

it rocked so hard i’m real sleepy now.

more LA members confirmed,
more talking to people about stuff,
too many cool things to hack on.

got a good movie today too, but haven’t been bothered to put it up in a format that isn’t pure bloat.

miniconf day 1

funky, funky. Saw some Debian, saw some audio, hung out with people, grabbed some lunch with tridge and andrew bartlett (and someone else who SORRY, i’ve forgotten your name),

ran into Linus, said hi, minded each others laptops while running errands and heard a *very* funny story about why he got here late. Basically, he ended up sitting in a plane, for an hour and a half, while it wouldn’t start. It so wouldn’t start that the lights were out. Not only the lights, but the emergency lights as well. Funny, very funny.

grabbed coffee with andrew cowie instead of some of the later day sessions, and had some good chatting.

then came back, chatted, joked and found out that our theories about rusty running for LA ctte were pretty much spot on (although he would be great, he could also have time constraints), then he went in search of a local (instead of finding himself, who although left here 7 years ago, knew more than anyone else of us standing around). Then headed down to a pub’s ‘beer garden’ – otherwise probably known as the beer green house (it was noticably warmer than anywhere else, and a place i would *not* want to be when it was actuallly hot) and had a few drinks.

large table of us, had fun, exchanged funny stories and discussions about file systems (including hearing the permissions on linux and linus dialling his hard disk story from the man himself), discussions on phase trees and why they may be rather cool (and possibly not patent encumbered), reiser, success/failure stories and all sorts of other things.

then, went got thai food. nice, more chatting, and all was good. then a significantly smaller group of us headed to the pub (again). Bdale promises to join later in the week, when not jetlagged. :)

back in room now, blogging. hrrrm… probably not making much sense – should blog at times other than after midnight and after many beers.

Check out my Photos from today! (12 Jan). Not only that, but there’s photos from somebody else as well! wow.

What I’ve seen of Adelaide so far.

Just got back from the pub (well, the second one) – we’ve been to two.

Met Kim Oldfield (LUV dude) on the plane (was a few seats ahead of me) and had a chat on the way over – funky.

Got picked up from the airport (and fsck the airport is close to city, have heard planes all day – i would really love to try and get close to the runway :)

then headed into the accommodation – which is quite spacious actually.

linux.conf.au tomorrow!

well, the conf doesn’t actually *start* tomorrow (well, today) – okay SUNDAY – but that’s when i’m flying in.

in adelaide at about 12:30.

Fun, hacking, beer and food. rock!

200th entry

wow, real interesting – check the care factor.

well, at least i’ve stuck with it – so yay me.

and it’s pretty close to the new year too – if only i could be bothered going and working out when the first entry was…

spending a lot of time at home – which is good for the lack of money expenditure, but i really feel like i should be accomplishing more – maybe i’ll have to hack some more instead of reading/writing email – there’s a lot of it – and it takes time to go through. and write.. urrghhh… more to do….

gotta write some more LA memberdb code – maybe later tonight.. who knows.

we got a new amp, and things actually sound a *lot* better. NAD gear rocks – C320BEE amp, 50watt beast that would easily beat any lower brands 80 or 90 watt amps. Only $540, it sounds like it should cost a lot more. If you’re looking at surround gear – forget it unless you’re willing to spend *at least* $3,500 on the receiver – this NAD stereo amp blew surround gear costing over twice as much out of the water – it’s chalk and chocolate – the NAD being chocolate.

I don’t think our 15year old KEF speakers are quite up to the same as modern day counterparts. They cost about $1,600 when we got them (and that’s a lot of money back then) – compared to the ~$1,200 B&W bookshelves (that’s bookshelf speakers, not some weird book storage/speaker combo) i reckon i prefered the B&W sound a bit – but these are still good.

we now have a remote for the amp too – so there’s yet another remote lying around – maybe we should get one of those combo things – could be quite useful, and means that we don’t have to find all of the others :)

mmmm… Tool sounds good. lovin it.

i now feel absolutely justified that stereo gear is worth spending money on :)

bochs and multiboot

got the example multiboot kernel from the GRUB sources to boot in bochs. and grub… yay!

it’s a slow simulation – but should be useful… should bring it over to the laptop too.

nearly got membership applications up

nearly have membership stuff up..

debian and new php… interesting – backporting packages. and for some reason the php packages don’t like using fakeroot to build them. *sigh* oh well…

now only to get past people problems…..

memberdb

actually have made a fair bit of progress – only a bit more of the admin UI to do and it’ll accept and track memberships and do all sorts of funky biz.

just hope digital is back and functioning soon.

NO UNREAD MAIL!

woah – i think i’ve read all my mail – and maybe even done some things i’m meant to.

this is weird.

really weird.

well, there’s still stuff to do…..

LUV Installfest Photos

Enjoy.

pants off!

jdub has promised to wear a dress as his intro speech at Linux Conf AU’s gnome miniconf….

(this is half publicising it everywhere so that we can force him to do it, and half just for a good laugh)

pants

Some fixing on my box (darn libtool and crap) and now jhbuild is actually doing some building and it’s working! yay!

well… let’s see if i can get evolution and all it’s dependencies going… :)

pants!

reminder to self

find out why linux 2.4.22-ben2-stew2-xfs is crashing on saving the clock on shutdown. It’s really annoying.

Junkcode updates

New stuff on junkcode including my LaTeX word counter, scripts to help in Tru64 to FreeBSD migration and PINE to Maildir stuff.

reiser4

I’m trying to go through and understand parts of the reiser4 code – specifically where and how blocks are freed.

I thought that maybe as a little introductry thing I could try and implement a “secure delete” option – i.e. one that basicall just writes rubbish over a block just before freeing it.

I have a feeling i’m going to have to ask some questions on the reiserfs-list :)

really cool Austrian movie on SBS

Just saw the last 50 mins – 1hr of this really hilarious Austrian film on SBS. All in German (or the version of it that is spoken there – i don’t know) it had me really laughing all out loud.

Heros in Tyrol

and here’s about the only thing that Google shows about it:
http://www.mostra.org/23/english/filmes/23.htm

bloody hilarious – would love the DVD so i could watch it all – musical comedy. great.

relocate pc?

Although it’s real good having a nice fast computer under the desk, the breeze from the fans is making my feet cold.

Needs an exhaust fan too – don’t like it only having one at the front (to cool hard drives) and the power supply’s (two).

Whoever the idiot was who decided that the graphics chip should face AWAY from the airflow inside the case should be twacked on the head. That’s where the biggest lot of heat is in my box – right beside the graphics card – because there’s sweet FA airflow around it (well, excluding the little fan on the chip there).

my old free open diary account finally got deleted – just after i downloaded it (WITH NOTES!), so now i may go update my free open diary import script to import notes as well. now that would be cool……

nearly there

getting closer and closer, i think i’ve managed to cover everything.

constructing the log book which also needs to be handed in, collating things from here and there. This entry is basically the last one that’s going to appear as i’m simply too lazy to print this off tomorrow.

180 odd pages, hoping that i can catch ron or carlo today to go over parts of it.

still have to write intro/conclusion. urghhhhhhhhhh

added final presentation slides

http://www.flamingspork.com/honors/final_presentation_html/

Enjoy.
