What is the “Aussie Spirit” we keep hearing about, and why isn’t it at my local bottle shop?

Great music, but one day will they PLEASE get a web site that has some form of usability. I mean, really.
FTA disastrous for Australian computer industry and users
Dr Andrew Tridgell (or tridge as he is more commonly known as) has got a great paper up on his site about the AU-US FTA. It’s short, sweet and to the point.
FTA disastrous for Australian computer industry and users
In "About the Author" he does fail to simply say “tridge: genius”, but he does tend to be a bit modest :)

But remember to also enjoy the morphine :)
all about never getting drawing on a web search
That’s why I’m linking to Sketches on the hope that if we do it in enough places, we’ll be able to convince certain search engines that it’s the most important type of drawing or drafting something out there.
google and wayback machine
help find old source that you thought could have been lost. ahhh… googling for your own work.
and qemu with i386 only binaries is nice too. works quite well. I mean, sure I actually have sunk low enough to have i386 machines around, but this is way cooler :)
american talk shows
Jerry Springer, Ricki Lake and whatever else is on has this wonderful effect of no matter how crap your life is, no matter how screwed up you feel, they let you know that there’s always a country with a ready supply of people more screwed up.
mess
everybody’s mess is okay but mine.
Inkscape
Just did my first illustration using Inkscape (www.inkscape.org). It’s pretty cool. Open Source Vector illustrator (produces SVG graphics and has good bitmap export).
i.e. select what you want, File->Export Bitmap (and it’s already gone to the “export selection” thing, choose the res of the image, where it is, and click export.
Funky!

The instructions are: Grab the nearest book, open it to page 23, find the 5th sentence, post the text of the sentence in your journal along with these instructions.
This optimization prevents the wasted copying of large amounts of data (the address space, easily tens of megabytes); in the common case a process executes a new executable image immediately after forking.

cheerleaders
I think I now understand them, at least for american football. The game is so bloody slow and mostly boring that you’ve got to have *something* to look at that actually *does* something while at the game.
Hell, I’d wish they’d televise them now.
superbowl
well, after a 13 hour length american national anthem, much like one i saw on some show where it was so long you’d start falling asleep – they’re actually playing “football”.
What a pack of wimps. Stacking on 40 pounds of padding and a helmet to play a game with less contact than Rugby.
really, they should get a proper sport.
200th entry
wow, real interesting – check the care factor.
well, at least i’ve stuck with it – so yay me.
and it’s pretty close to the new year too – if only i could be bothered going and working out when the first entry was…
spending a lot of time at home – which is good for the lack of money expenditure, but i really feel like i should be accomplishing more – maybe i’ll have to hack some more instead of reading/writing email – there’s a lot of it – and it takes time to go through. and write.. urrghhh… more to do….
gotta write some more LA memberdb code – maybe later tonight.. who knows.
we got a new amp, and things actually sound a *lot* better. NAD gear rocks – C320BEE amp, 50watt beast that would easily beat any lower brands 80 or 90 watt amps. Only $540, it sounds like it should cost a lot more. If you’re looking at surround gear – forget it unless you’re willing to spend *at least* $3,500 on the receiver – this NAD stereo amp blew surround gear costing over twice as much out of the water – it’s chalk and chocolate – the NAD being chocolate.
I don’t think our 15year old KEF speakers are quite up to the same as modern day counterparts. They cost about $1,600 when we got them (and that’s a lot of money back then) – compared to the ~$1,200 B&W bookshelves (that’s bookshelf speakers, not some weird book storage/speaker combo) i reckon i prefered the B&W sound a bit – but these are still good.
we now have a remote for the amp too – so there’s yet another remote lying around – maybe we should get one of those combo things – could be quite useful, and means that we don’t have to find all of the others :)
mmmm… Tool sounds good. lovin it.
i now feel absolutely justified that stereo gear is worth spending money on :)
NO UNREAD MAIL!
woah – i think i’ve read all my mail – and maybe even done some things i’m meant to.
this is weird.
really weird.
well, there’s still stuff to do…..
really cool Austrian movie on SBS
Just saw the last 50 mins – 1hr of this really hilarious Austrian film on SBS. All in German (or the version of it that is spoken there – i don’t know) it had me really laughing all out loud.
Heros in Tyrol
and here’s about the only thing that Google shows about it:

bloody hilarious – would love the DVD so i could watch it all – musical comedy. great.
optus the suck
changing IP addresses while someone is online is *not* cool. What’s more, it’s *really* annoying. optus, you suck balls and your fraudband irritates me.
I wish we had some decent cable in this country.
friday
eerily quite driving to uni,
eerily got a close car park.
taught,
got taught,
had lunch,
got taught some more. (found out that it requires a large amount of information to convey the unlikely event of me arriving to a lecture on time, although i really found that out on wednesday)
went had coffee, was good. so was (cold wind) walk.
went out for food and (non) drink with ppl for danni’s bday. the present of not brining my camera was appreciated and “just kept giving”.
