Drizzle Meeting Photos

I didn’t take many photos at the Drizzle Meeting, although I did take a couple at the end at the Hopvine (just down the road from Brian’s place).

A good read is Brian’s wrap up of the meeting.

It was really good to get a number of people together and chat. In future, we’ll no doubt have larger gatherings that are really inclusive.

Experimenting with Ilford Delta ASA 3200 B&W Film

So it has been a long time since I’ve shot film… and it pretty much was always colour. Part of this was in prep for Burning Man. i.e. how to take a photo in the dark (and part was “hey, what cool tricks can I do”).

Reading up on film, I found Ilford Delta 3200 Professional as something that could be interesting to shoot with. I’d read a bit about it, checked out the flickr group and decided what the heck, it’s only money.

I grabbed my dad’s old Ricoh SLR and took some photos – trying to learn how this film responds, what I can and can’t do with it along with developing my own skills.

I got Michaels to develop and scan (hey, they do B&W processing in Melbourne in a reasonable time frame)… ignoring the advice of some that doing it yourself gets you best results (anyone for a Laundry/Brewery/Darkroom?)

While at Rrose, I took this shot which I quite like:

If you look at full size you see the wonderful graininess that is this film:

But a simple GIMP Despeckle gets you:

(and a much smaller JPEG file size). But I do kinda like the speckle.

The amazing thing to note is that this was shot handheld with a not particularly fast lens and without any artificial light beyond what was at rrose at 9 or 10pm in August.

MySQL Conference: Day 2

Day 2 Photos

I gave my Intro to Cluster talk and then a Design and Internals of MySQL Cluster.

Also some photos from the DRBD BoF in the evening (which was really good). So was the BLOB streaming BoF earlier (but I didn’t take my camera out).

Currently in Eben’s keynote on Wednesday morning. As always, insightful and thought provoking.

Saturn’s autoweb

I’ve hacked my scripts that generate doxygen docs to also build MySQL 4.1, 5.0 and 5.1 for AMD64 (the box that it’s running on) with Cluster. This is to help my idea of running Gallery at home with NDB disk data tables in very recent MySQL builds.

How’s it going so far? Well… I’ve found some bugs and some seemingly strange behaviour here and there. However, bug reports will come, and I’m currently running a bit of an older build.

I’ll make the URL of the Gallery public at some point too

I bought a new toy yesterday (and about time I did). A Logitech presentation clicker thingy:

It has the laser pointer, the forward and backwards slide buttons and, arguably most interestingly, a built-in timer with vibrate alert.

What’s annoying is that the forward/back is done by page up and page down – and this doesn’t work for the “appear on click” thing for OO.org. Luckily for me, I just about never use that “feature” as the in version of OOo that Ubuntu ships in their stable release (5.04) is just too darn buggy in that area. I do sometimes wonder if people use the stable release of their product for any real work.

But it’s a nice little device and seems to be an improvement of the using the remote control feature of my phone to do the same thing (if you didn’t do anything for X seconds, it disconnected and had to renegotiate something that took a few seconds).

Augie March – Moo, You Bloody Choir

While I was away (I think I was in Stockholm at the time… not sure actually), Augie March were doing signings of their new album at JB in the city. Jessie volunteered to go get me a copy. So when I got home, I had this waiting for me:

It’s an awesome album too. I’ve really liked One Crowded Hour since I first heard it (a long time ago now) and am really pleased that it got onto a release. I’m also a fan of Clockwork and Vernoona and a whole bunch of other tracks.

They’ve got some gigs coming up, hoping I’ll be able to get to them.

At the recent MySQL DevConf in Sorrento, Italy, I decided to take a photo out the window of my hotel room. Here it is. I’ve stayed at worse places, just :)

It also looked really similar to this from the breakfast and lunch room.

Pity we were then stuck in the basement working for most of the day. But it rocked. Got through lots of stuff, which is good.
